Description of the attraction

The bustling Thamel district in Kathmandu has been the center of the tourism industry for more than 4 decades. Its popularity began in the 70s of the last century, when numerous artists began to come to Nepal and stay in inexpensive Thamel hotels for several weeks. Despite the fact that these quarters are now referred to in the foreign press as "ghettos", some travelers who save their money still choose Thamel's hotels.

The Thamel area consists of narrow streets lined with various shops. It sells food items including fresh vegetables, fruits and pastries, camping equipment, DVDs, handicrafts, souvenirs, woolen items. Many items are made on the spot - in small craft workshops. So, here they make scarves from light pashmina, cut out Buddha figurines from wood, make jewelry from gold.

Thamel is also home to numerous travel agencies offering hundreds of excursions in and around Kathmandu. There are also restaurants and cafes where you can find dishes of Tibetan, Nepalese, Indian cuisines. Prices here are much higher than in non-tourist areas.

Thamel is also popular among climbers: it is here that mountain conquerors will go first. Here you can find good climbing equipment, necessary clothing, sleeping bags, tents, flashlights, bowlers and much more.

Cars, bicycle rickshaws move around Thamel along with hundreds of pedestrians, which occasionally causes congestion.
