Description of the attraction
On the upper reaches of the Sura River of the Penza region, near the village of Zolotarevka, in 1882 an archaeological discovery was made of an ancient settlement that settled on this land in the 3-4th century. The result of the work of archaeologists over several decades was the excavation of a historical place called the "Zolotarevskoe settlement", the total area of which is 16 hectares.
The Zolotarevskoe settlement, which served as a stop on the trade route from Bulgar to Kiev, for many years was the border zone of the Volga Bulgaria. Fenced on all sides by forests, moats and powerful ramparts, the ancient city has been an impregnable fortress for many centuries. According to the materials of the excavations, it was established; that from the 8th to the 10th century the Mordovian culture prevailed in the settlement, in the 11-13th centuries jewelry, weapons and tools belonged to the Burtases, Mordovians and Bulgars. In 1237, during the Mongol invasion, a battle took place that completely destroyed the entire settlement of the Zolotarevsky settlement. Numerous remains of people, items of Mongolian weapons and traces of fires were found under a small layer of greenery. For this place, time seems to have stopped. People no longer settled in this area, and the Zolotorevskoe settlement remained untouched until our time after the battle.
Today, excavations continue on the historical land, and the Zolotarevskoe Settlement - the Crossroads of Civilization Festival is being held on a separate territory with theatrical performances of battles, a fair of folk craftsmen and a festive concert program.
Zolotarevskoe settlement is a unique archaeological monument of the medieval history of the region.

An object that is definitely worthy of attention and visiting I visited this object together with an excursion group a few months ago. The price for an excursion ticket to the museum is inexpensive. And in the museum itself there really is something to look at - a lot of interesting finds, which are in a very presentable condition, despite the fact that their age is …

Zolotarevka Everything is free at the settlement, but as at any archaeological site, you will see ramparts and ditches, as well as excavation sites marked by log cabins. The main artifacts are exhibited in the Penza Museum of Local Lore and the Museum in the village of Zolotarevka, but there it is better to get together in a group and book an excursion.
