Traditionally, people choose places to live near large and small rivers, lakes and other bodies of water. The history of Kostroma is inextricably linked with the Volga, the city not only has the status of a regional center, it is also a large river port.

Foundation of the city

Archaeologists claim that Finno-Ugric tribes were the first to appear on the local lands, followed by Slavic tribes. The official date of the foundation of Kostroma is 1152, the version was put forward by the famous historian of the 17th century V. Tatishchev, based on various sources that have not survived.

Among the most interesting facts related to the founding and development of the city are the following:

  • 1213 - the first mention of Kostroma;
  • 1238 - the city survived the invasion of Batu;
  • 1246 - the city had the honor of becoming the capital of the Kostroma appanage principality;
  • 1364 - the city joins the Moscow principality.

The latter fact opens a new page in the history of Kostroma, which is no longer briefly described. The settlement goes through the same stages in its development as the all-Russian state.

In 1419, Kostroma changed its location, the Kostroma Kremlin was being built on a hill. This allowed the residents to feel more secure. During the Troubles, the city was twice occupied by Polish troops, devastating and ravaging it. Therefore, the local militia supported Minin and Pozharsky.

Another important fact from the history of Kostroma is that Mikhail Romanov was called to the kingdom in 1613, in the Ipatiev Monastery. Therefore, Kostroma is sometimes called the "cradle" of the Romanov dynasty.

Provincial town

A new period in the development of the city began at the end of the Time of Troubles, firstly, the defensive fortifications were restored, and secondly, the number of residents in the settlement increased. By the middle of the 17th century, Kostroma took third place in terms of economic development, yielding the first two lines to Moscow and Yaroslavl.

In December 1796, thanks to Paul I, Kostroma received the status of a provincial center, which also contributes to the further development of the city. During the 18th-19th centuries, its area expanded, architectural masterpieces and religious buildings appeared.

History of Kostroma in the twentieth century

This is the time of social and economic activity, the townspeople take part in the first Russian revolution (1905–1907), create the Council of Workers' Deputies, and the second in Russia. In 1913, the opposite event takes place - in Kostroma, Nicholas II is enthusiastically honored, who travels around Russia in connection with the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.

A new stage in the history of Kostroma begins after the October events of 1917, it will also be filled with heroic and tragic events, large and small, that are significant only for the townspeople or celebrated throughout the country.
