Description of the attraction
Montjuïc hill is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, in the southern part of the city of Barcelona and is located at an altitude of 200m above sea level. The name "Montjuïc" is translated as "Jewish mountain", possibly because on one of its slopes there is an old Jewish cemetery.
The Montjuïc hill is not only a picturesque place from which a beautiful panorama of Barcelona opens up, it is also an important historical and cultural point of the city, where many interesting sights and places worthy of attention are located.
First of all, I would like to note the Montjuïc fortress, located at the very top of the hill. Once there was a watchtower. In 1652, during the Spanish offensive against Barcelona, a defensive fortress was built around the tower in just a few weeks. Today, within the walls of the fortress, there is the Military Museum, which displays collections of weapons, armor and military uniforms.
The descent from the fortress goes down through the territory of green parks and gardens. These gardens are very picturesque, they reveal the richness of Mediterranean flora, especially the exotic collection of cacti here. Going down the avenues of the parks, you can get to the Joan Miró Foundation. It is a two-story museum that displays the works of the great painter, sculptor and ceramist Joan Miró.
On the slopes of the Montjuïc hill is the magnificent National Palace, which houses the Museum of Art, the Ethnographic Museum and the Museum of Archeology. There is also an open-air museum - "Spanish Village", which demonstrates an example of typical rural life in Spain. Below the National Palace is the famous color-musical Magic Fountain, built for the opening of the International Exhibition in 1929.
