Arch Island
Arch Island

Description of the attraction

The small Greek island of Arkoy (Arki) is located in the eastern part of the Aegean Sea and is part of the Cyclades archipelago. It is located almost at the very border of Greece and Turkey (about 30 km from the Turkish coast) and very close to the island of Patmos.

The area of this islet is only 6 square kilometers, and the population is about 50 people. Most of them live near the island's only harbor. Basically, the population of the island is engaged in fishing and goat breeding, and also employed in the service of a few tourists. The island's landscapes are mostly rocky with little vegetation. Low shrubs predominate, but there are also olive trees.

The main historical attraction of the Arch is the ruins of the ancient acropolis (from which little has survived to this day), located on the top of a hill, from which a magnificent view of the harbor and sea expanses with numerous islets and the Turkish coast opens. They say that it is from this hill that you can watch a stunningly beautiful sunset over the waters of the Aegean Sea. You can also visit a very beautiful cave with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. True, it will be difficult to find the entrance, as it is overgrown with bushes and olive trees. There are also a number of small churches on the island.

There are several good beaches on Arkoy Island. The most visited of these is Tiganakya Beach, known as the "Blue Lagoon". It is located in a small rocky bay and is famous for its crystal clear waters. The sandy bay of Padella near the harbor and the beach of Limnari are also popular.

Today, the island's tourist infrastructure is rather poorly developed. However, it is still possible to rent a room here and there are several good taverns. This island is especially famous among yachtsmen. Arkoy Island is ideal for lovers of complete solitude and silence.
