Description of the attraction

The Svishtovsky Monastery of the Holy Mother of God (before its restoration in the 20th century it was called the Intercession of the Virgin) is located one or two kilometers from the city of Svishtov. Research has shown that the monastery was built in antiquity on the site of a Thracian sanctuary, but was destroyed during the Ottoman Empire. According to legend, the holy monastery was restored by the Greek prince Vlashko Kantakuzin during the reign of Sultan Abdul Azis.

The monastery complex consists of two buildings - a two-storey church with a bell tower on the roof and an agricultural building. Of greatest interest are not the icons or the interior of the temple, but the appearance of the building, which makes a great impression. In the walled courtyard, there is also a wooden gazebo and a stone altar - the only structure that reminds of an old destroyed monastery. Opposite the gates of the monastery there is a source of mineral water, which is considered to have medicinal properties.

The Svishtovsky Monastery is located in a picturesque mountainous area, grapes grow on the nearby plains - a great place for tourist walks.
