Description of the attraction
Today, the legendary Greek island of Kos, located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea, is one of the most popular tourist destinations. The island of Kos is famous for its magnificent beaches, rich centuries-old history and many attractions, attracting many people from all over the world every year.
Perhaps one of the most famous and interesting sights of the island, which is definitely worth a visit, is the small charming monastery of St. John. It is located in the southern part of Kos, just 7 km from Kefalos settlement on a picturesque hill with fantastic panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea.
The monastery was built in the traditional style of architecture for these places in white and blue tones and is literally buried in greenery. Here, in the shade of a spreading century-old plane tree, you can relax, escape from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the magical atmosphere of silence and harmony of this amazing place.
The small snow-white church with beautiful wall paintings and icons is very beautiful and cozy. The area in front of the temple is lined with a mosaic of gray and white pebbles in the form of zigzag waves. Nearby there is an old dilapidated bell tower - the main landmark, which you will most likely see from the access road (by the way, an excellent asphalt road leads to the monastery).
On the night of August 28-29 (the day of the Beheading of John the Baptist), many pilgrims flock to the monastery of St. John to honor the memory of the saint. After the all-night vigil, mass festivities take place here.
