Description of the attraction
The Church of the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God in the village of Khuzhir is a small Orthodox church, which is one of the cult sights of Olkhon Island.
The beautiful village of Khuzhir is the largest settlement on the island in terms of population. Every year Khuzhir is visited by a large number of tourists who are simply mesmerized by the amazing and unique landscapes of these places.
The construction of the church began in 2000. Its construction lasted for six years. Today, Olkhon Island is a place with an actively developing tourism business. However, at the time of the construction of the temple, there were not only good roads, but also electricity and communications, without which it is simply unrealistic to live now. The first electric cable to the island was laid only in 2005 along the bottom of the Olkhonskiye Vorota Strait.
To build such an “unprofitable facility” on this site seemed like sheer madness. In 2006, the grand opening of the church took place. The initiator of the construction of the temple was a local resident N. Usova. It was she who donated most of the funds spent on the construction of the church. The rest of the money was donated by locals and sponsors.
The parish of the church is small, mostly residents of Olkhon. The brick building of the Church of the Reigning Mother of God looks quite simple. The church building is crowned with blue domes. Very simple and interior decoration of the temple. The walls inside the monastery are painted with scenes from the Bible. The temple is always light and warm. Church services are held every day.
