Description of the attraction

The Church of the Meeting of the Ozeryanskaya Icon of the Mother of God is a unique structure in the city of Kharkov and is located at the highest point of the city. This large Orthodox church was founded in 1892 on the former outskirts of the city and remains the only temple in the city that intricately combines Romanesque and Old Russian motifs in its architecture.

Since 1874, a chapel was located on the site of the church, a prayer service was served in it during processions with the Ozeryansky image of the Mother of God. The new majestic and beautiful temple was designed by engineer V. Kh. Nemkin and was built of red unplastered bricks. The facades of the building are saturated with architectural elements that were borrowed from ancient Russian architecture. Near the massive, four-pillar church, crowned with a light drum with a spherical dome, there is an elegant four-tier bell tower, about 40 meters high, which is connected to the western vestibule.

The preserved three-tiered ceramic iconostasis is of artistic value in the interior of the church; baroque techniques were used in its solution. Its peculiarity is the installation of icons not on one side, but on both (external and internal). There are three thrones in the temple.

In 1938, the church was closed, and the episcopal see was moved to the Kazan Church, which was located on Lysaya Gora. Since 1942, during the German occupation, divine services resumed again. In August 1943, after the liberation of Kharkov, patriotic work was carried out in the monastery, money was collected for defense and families of soldiers.

In the period 1943 - 1945. Ozeryanskaya church was overhauled. In the 90s. the iconostasis was renewed in the church, the fence was altered, a two-storey building was erected, which houses a baptistery, a Sunday school and an icon shop.
