It was born through the efforts of biologist Edward Legescas and is located in a popular urban recreation area 10 km from the city. Today, about 200 animals, representing one and a half hundred species, have a permanent residence permit in the Klaipeda Zoo. Many of them are under the protection of the Lithuanian and International Red Data Books.

The old name "Klaipeda Zoological Garden" was replaced in 2014 with the modern one - "Klaipeda Zoo", as it is more suitable for the constantly developing scientific one. research and educational institution. Citizens and tourists also know this place as a mini-zoo of Klaipeda, because its territory is not too large so far.
