The name of this Russian city located in the Far East gives a hint about what elements should be present on its heraldic symbol. The coat of arms of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky does indeed contain images of two saints, Paul and Peter. Firstly, the toponym comes from the names of these representatives of Orthodoxy, and secondly, they act as a kind of defenders of the city, and in the coat of arms they play the role of shield holders.
Description of the coat of arms
The main official symbol of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky contains other interesting elements that cannot be found on the images of the coats of arms of cities or countries. For example, rather large black hills, the so-called fire-breathing mountains, occupy the central place on the shield. From above, they are crowned with scarlet flames and columns of black smoke.
The compositional construction of the coat of arms of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is rather complicated, since there are several interconnected complexes, including:
- shield with fire-breathing mountains;
- Peter and Paul are supporters, saints dressed in golden robes;
- tower gold crown with the same laurel wreath-hoop;
- two crossing anchors;
- azure ribbon decorated around the elements of the coat of arms.
On the one hand, the city's coat of arms contains many diverse elements, on the other, it looks quite stylish (and in color photos too), since the color palette is restrained. Dominated by gold and azure colors, which are actively used by heraldists when drawing up new symbols. Black balances out vibrant golds and azure tones.
Symbols of images
The modern official symbol is based on the historical coat of arms, which was granted in April 1913. It is clear that with the onset of the era of Soviet power, it could not be used, since it contained elements that were inextricably linked with the Russian Empire.
Today this sign with more than a century of history looks modern and stylish, each element has its own meaning. For example, the tower crown crowning the shield demonstrates that Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky acts in the status of an urban district. A laurel wreath, dressed on a crown, will tell those who know that the city plays the role of a regional center. The shield holders, Saints Paul and Peter, are the spiritual patrons for this settlement and its inhabitants. The azure ribbon is a symbol of the state award received by the city in 1972 (Order of the Red Banner of Labor).
