Description of the attraction
Castle Hill, located in the heart of the Norwegian city of Tønsberg, is a large hill on which King Haakon Haakonson built a fortress with a royal castle, monastery and hospital. Fortress walls made of stone, after many centuries, seem to grow out of the rock.
In 1503, despite its inaccessibility, the bastion was attacked by the Swedes and was destroyed. Now only ruins remain of it. The only reminder of its former greatness is the seventeen-meter tower, restored in 1888, rising on a cliff, from where a magnificent view of the city's surroundings opens. The initials of the three Norse kings are engraved on the wall at the entrance to the tower.
In order for visitors to imagine the appearance of a medieval castle, there is a bronze model between the ruins and the tower, and on the ruins there are plaques with historical stories in English.
