Those planning to visit the famous city located in the bay of the Gulf of Naples should definitely visit the city metro. The fact is that the Naples metro is not just a part of the public transport system, it is also a real museum. The design of many stations is amazing. Among them can be called the station "Dante" with lines of poetry of the great poet glowing on the walls or the station "University" with black columns in the form of human faces and colored crystal panels adorning the vaults …
But if you are not interested in art and expect only convenience and speed from the subway, then even then you will not be disappointed. The Neapolitan subway is a comfortable and very fast means of transportation around the city, highly demanded by both citizens and tourists. Especially busy is the Yellow Line, which connects the city center with the outskirts; its stations, by the way, are distinguished by a particularly striking and unusual design.
Thus, we can say that comfort, speed and beauty are combined in this transport system into a harmonious whole.
Fare and where to buy tickets
Tickets for all types of Neapolitan public transport (including the metro) can be bought at certain kiosks, which are easily recognized by the "Tabacchi" sign. Also, tickets can be purchased in the usual way for Russians - in vending machines installed in the metro.
Children under six years old enter the metro free of charge, for other passengers a ticket is required. There are the following types of passes:
- for an hour and a half;
- for a day;
- for a week;
- for a month;
- for a year.
For tourists, the best option would be a special ticket, valid for three days and giving the right to free admission to three city attractions, including the archaeological museum. The cost of such a ticket is twelve euros. Do not forget to punch it when entering the subway. Its validity period begins at the time of composting.
If you decide to purchase a ticket for a longer period (for example, a month or a week), please note that this travel document must include your name and date of birth. In order to use such a ticket, you must always carry with you some kind of document proving your identity: so in the event of a meeting with the controller, you will be able to prove that the ticket belongs to you.
Long-term tickets only need to be composted once - the first time they are used. This must be done. If suddenly, for some reason, it was not possible to punch, be sure to write the time and date of the first trip on the back of the ticket - there is a specially designated place for this. If you choose to ignore this rule, you will have to pay a large fine.
Metro lines
Naples metro map
Currently, the Neapolitan metro includes three branches, their total length is almost thirty-five kilometers. There are thirty-four stations in the metro. Four hundred seventy thousand passengers use the metro services every day. More than one hundred and seventy million people are transported by its trains annually.
The length of the branch, indicated on the map in yellow, is eighteen kilometers. There are eighteen stations on this line. Almost all of them are deep-level stations. A small part of the line is ground. The branch connects the central part of the city, where many historical sights are located, with its northern districts. The line will be extended in the coming years. She will have to go through the airport and close in a ring. Currently, this line is one of the main transport arteries of the city, it is most often used by townspeople and tourists. It is on this line that the most beautiful stations are located.
The Blue Line, which is sixteen kilometers long, has twelve stations.
The Blue Line is the newest and shortest of the three. It was opened in the 2000s. Its length is just over two kilometers. There are four stations on it (all are deep). The branch is located in the west of the city.
The lines are operated by different operators: the Yellow and Blue lines have a common operator, but the Blue Line is operated by a different company.
Working hours
Each of the branches of the Neapolitan metro has its own opening hours. The first trains of the Yellow Line leave at six o'clock in the morning, the line operates until eleven o'clock in the morning (and one of the stations closes at ten o'clock and twenty minutes). The Blue Line has about the same work schedule.
The opening hours of the Blue Line are significantly different from those of the above two branches. The Blue Line only operates five days a week and is closed on weekends. Her work begins quite late - at seven thirty minutes in the morning. Train traffic stops in the afternoon - at half past three.
The time intervals between formulations are usually about eight minutes. During peak hours, they are reduced to six minutes, and after nine o'clock in the evening, trains run approximately once every fifteen minutes.
History
We can say that the history of the Neapolitan metro began in the second half of the 19th century. True, at that time there was no subway in the city, no work on its construction was carried out and there was not even a plan for its construction. But then in the city and its environs, railways were built and functioned, which had several sections located underground. All these roads were practically unconnected in any way. In the middle of the twentieth century, the idea was expressed to unite them, to create a single transport network, which would include the metro.
The construction of the metro began in the mid 70s of the XX century. The work progressed slowly, the opening of the metro took place only in the 90s. The first open section was four kilometers long and had six stations. Later, other branches appeared, several funiculars were built, which today are also part of a single transport network, which includes surface railways and the metro. All of these vehicles are part of the urban high-speed transport system.
According to the plans for the development of the metro, three new lines will appear in the near future, and all existing ones will be extended. The total length of the tracks will exceed ninety kilometers, one hundred and fourteen stations will function (of which more than twenty will be interchange stations).
Peculiarities
To increase the tourist attraction of Naples, a project is being implemented to improve the design of metro stations. Considerable success has already been achieved: today the Toledo station is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful European metro stations.
The entrance to this station is located on the main shopping street of the city. The lobby is decorated with intricate mosaics, their theme is the life of the Italian city and its history. Going down to the station, the passenger seems to find himself in the underwater world. The special mosaics and play of light create an incredible impression.
But "Toledo" is not the only originally designed station of the Neapolitan subway. We can say that this metro itself is a museum worth visiting. At least this definition applies to many stations on the Yellow Line.
