Description of the attraction

On the northern coast of Crete, about 70 km from Chania and 80 km from Heraklion, is the picturesque port town of Rethymno, a popular tourist center with a well-developed infrastructure and one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in Crete.

Rethymno was founded in the 13th century during the rule of the Venetians on the island and harmoniously combines the styles of different eras and cultures in its architecture. The highlight of Rethymno, undoubtedly, is the historic center of the city, which has been perfectly preserved to this day, or the so-called "Old Town", with its unique flavor and an abundance of various attractions.

You should probably start your acquaintance with the old city with its "heart" - the Venetian fortress of Fortezza, towering on the Paleokastro hill, built in the second half of the 16th century. Once there was a military garrison and administration and only partially residential buildings (mostly Venetians), served as a fortress and a temporary refuge for the residents of Rethymno (in case of an attack on the city), whose houses were outside the fortress. During the Turkish period, the fortress underwent some changes and additions, but over time, almost all of them were removed and today Fortezza is a fine example of Venetian fortification architecture. However, it is worth climbing Paeokastro Hill not only for the sake of the old fortress, but also for the stunning panoramic views from its top. Opposite the central entrance to Fortezza, in the building that once housed the barracks, today there is an entertaining Archaeological Museum, which is rightfully considered one of the best museums in Crete.

In the center of the old town is the Venetian Loggia, built in the middle of the 16th century by the famous architect Michele Sanmichele. Once this elegant building was a place where various entertainment events for the local nobility were held, as well as meetings of statesmen, at which important economic and political issues were discussed. And on Platano Square you will find the famous Rimondi Fountain, built in 1626 by the order of the Governor of Rethymno A. Rimondi, after whom it actually got its name. Not far from the square, in a beautiful 17th century mansion, there is the Museum of History and Folk Art, the exposition of which will acquaint you in detail with the history of culture, traditions and peculiarities of the life and way of life of the islanders. The Gouor Gate, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, the Kara Musa Pasha Mosque and the Nerantze Mosque also deserve special attention.

And after walking around the streets of the Old Town and seeing its main attractions, you should definitely go to the picturesque embankment, and then look into one of the local cozy restaurants or cafes, where you can relax and enjoy traditional local cuisine.
