Description of the attraction
The Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built in 1600. The building originally belonged to the Uniate parish church. In 1798, His Grace Job handed over the church to the Orthodox parish. The Bobruisk parish included not only the inhabitants of Bobruisk with its forstadts and farms, but also the neighboring villages: Dumanovshchina, Yasny Les, Velichkovo, Domanovo.
In the church there was an ancient temple icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, written on a pine board. When the icon was written and who donated it - information has not reached our days.
Until 1892, the church was wooden, but in 1892 funds were released from the treasury and donations from parishioners were collected for a new stone church in the city center. The temple was built in just two years and consecrated in 1894. Male and female parish schools were opened at the cathedral.
During the Great Patriotic War, during the Nazi occupation, the cathedral remained open to parishioners. All the afflicted could receive consolation here. A cemetery was arranged near the temple, where the priests buried the dead soldiers. After the war, in the 60s, the cathedral was closed, all religious objects were transferred to the Orthodox community of Bobruisk. A swimming pool was set up in the church building.
The Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was again transferred to the Orthodox Church only on August 1, 2003. Work began on the restoration of the temple. The lighting of the temple took place on May 22, 2007. It was made by His Eminence Filaret, Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus.
