Description of the attraction
The National Museum in Gdansk is one of the seven most important museums in Poland. The building of the museum is a former Franciscan monastery, which has been hosting exhibitions since the end of the 19th century. After the end of World War II, the museum was renamed the Pomeranian Museum in Gdansk. In 1972, the museum was renamed the National Museum.
Currently, the museum has seven departments: the department of ancient art, the department of contemporary art, the department of ethnography, the department of traditions of the Polish nobility, the department of the green gates, the department of photographs of Gdańsk, and the department of the national anthem.
The museum houses the largest collection of works in Poland by Anton Meller (1563-1611), an artist known in the art world as the "artist from Gdańsk". Also, here is the famous painting by Hans Memling "The Last Judgment".
The permanent exhibition of the Department of Contemporary Art includes works by Polish artists of the 19th and 20th centuries (paintings, sculptures, ceramics). It often hosts exhibitions of contemporary art, chamber music concerts and creative meetings.
