It is known that the inhabitants of the Caucasus are distinguished by special pride, loyalty to traditions and respect for elders, which is reflected in the main symbols of the countries of this region. For example, it is worth taking a closer look at the coat of arms of Azerbaijan in order to see the deep symbolism of the main elements and colors, the continuity of generations, the connection with history and aspiration for the future.
Land of Lights
This is how the native people call Azerbaijan so beautifully and solemnly. The country is symbolically shown through the flames depicted in the center of the coat of arms. The eight-pointed star will remind you of the eight branches of the Turkic people, whose descendants constitute the main population of the country.
At the bottom of the coat of arms, a wreath of ears of wheat is braided, symbolizing fertility, wealth of the land, and oak branches. The emergence of this particular tree can be interpreted as a demonstration of the strength and power of the state.
Dreams of your own state
For many centuries, these blessed lands have been the subject of wars, civil strife, military coups and struggles for independence. Anyone came to power in the territories of modern Azerbaijan, but not the indigenous population. And only in 1920 a new, independent state appeared in the Caucasus - the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
The country's authorities understood the need to create state symbols. A national competition was announced to create a coat of arms, anthem and seal, but, unfortunately, the new republic did not last long. And in its place arose the Azerbaijan SSR, part of a new empire under the rule of Moscow, which determined what the state symbols of all the republics in its composition would be. Although the author of the coat of arms was Ruben Shkhiyan, a local graphic artist, his sketch was still based on the coat of arms of the USSR. Therefore, it was impossible to do without the symbols of the country of the Soviets.
On the state emblem of Azerbaijan there were, of course, images of a sickle, a hammer, a five-pointed star and the inscription "Workers of all countries, unite!" Wreaths of ears and cotton acted as national symbols, as representatives of the most developed branches of agriculture of this Caucasian republic.
In 1937, a new description of the main symbol of Azerbaijan was approved, in which there was a place for an oil rig, since the extraction of this mineral was an important place in the economy of the republic.
Modern life
Dreams of independence came true in the 1990s with the collapse of the USSR. In 1992, Azerbaijan received a new coat of arms, based on the symbols of the coat of arms of the first independent republic. The main details of the original design have been preserved, and details have received minor revisions, including flame, wheat and oak branches.
