Description of the attraction

The Zurich Tramway Museum is a transport museum specializing in the history of the Zurich tramway system. The main territory of the museum is located in the former Burgvis tram depot. The museum also has a workshop housed in the much smaller former Vartau tram depot. Initially, the "Vartau" depot was the main building of the museum and accommodated 5 models of trams, but in 2008 the museum was moved to the larger "Burgvis" depot, where it is located today. The museum is managed by the association "Verein Tram Museum Zürich", which has existed since 1968.

The main territory of the museum in Burgvis is open to the public several days a week and operates on a specific schedule that changes depending on the day of the week and the season of the year. The museum also organizes tram tours from the depot to the city center, billed as tram line 21.

The collection of the museum includes about 20 models of trams, most of which are serviceable. In addition to government-made trams, the collection includes models from private companies that carried passengers in the early years, including the 1897 "Strassenbahn Zürich-Oerlikon-Seebach" and the 1900 "Limmattal-Strassenbahn".

There are also exhibits on the mezzanine of the museum. Here you can see samples of tram interiors with illustrations of those years, documents and photographs. There is a souvenir shop where you can choose from books, postcards, mini-models of trams and other souvenirs.

The museum building is a cultural value of national importance.
