Many Russians dream of a trip to the West, but do not have visas, although they still have the opportunity to walk in a typical Western European city. Walking around Kaliningrad, especially along its old burgher part, allows you to plunge into the past, to feel on yourself the extraordinary aura of Koenigsberg.
There are a variety of attractions in this place, for example, natural monuments, in the form of the Curonian Spit, located not far from the city, or the Cathedral, where the remains of the great philosopher of all times and peoples, Immanuel Kant, rest.
Between Moscow and Leningrad
You shouldn't take this phrase literally, it's just that Kaliningrad is divided into three districts with the most common names - Central, Moskovsky, Leningradsky. Each of them has its own tourist zones and attractions, but the Moskovsky District is still the most popular among city guests. It is here that the highlight of the city is located - the island of Kant, as well as memorial sites associated with the famous philosopher.
The last world war left its terrible, unforgettable mark on the history of Kaliningrad: it lost its historical appearance, many buildings were destroyed, not all architectural masterpieces were restored. But even what has survived impresses with its thoughtfulness, grandeur of ideas, boldness of embodiment and aesthetics.
In the Moscow district of the city, you can order a general or thematic story, or develop your own, individual route through iconic places. The list of Kaliningrad sights includes:
- the island of Kant with the famous Cathedral and the tomb of the philosopher;
- Fish Village, a restored corner of the old town, which was a craft center;
- churches adapted for various cultural institutions, such as the Philharmonic Society or the Seamen's Palace of Culture.
In addition, ancient defensive structures have survived, now they are museum exposition sites.
Walks in Kaliningrad-Königsberg
The historical center, the "heart" of Kaliningrad, is located in the Leningrad region of the city. True, the most important object, the castle, has not survived, but tourist routes will lead to other military or cultural monuments of the city.
During an excursion or an independent trip, you can get acquainted with the Astronomical Bastion, the Royal Gate, the Kronprinz barracks. There is another amazing place on the map of Kaliningrad - the university botanical garden, the best place for walking at any time of the year.
