Official symbols such as the anthem, flag and coat of arms of Tatarstan were approved in the early 1990s. It is known that at this time the Soviet Union was living out its last months, many of the cities, regions and republics were striving for self-determination, gaining independence and, accordingly, their own heraldic signs.
The modern coat of arms of the republic was put into effect in February 1992, and the rules for its use are regulated by law.
Description of the heraldic symbol of Tatarstan
The coat of arms of the republic has a fairly bright palette, and all colors are often used in world heraldic practice. Also, artists note the refined style, elegance and precision of details.
The main symbol of Tatarstan is a round shield, this shape is also called Byzantine. This is the main difference between the heraldic sign and the coats of arms of many Russian cities and republics. There are various elements on the shield:
- the central winged leopard;
- solar disk;
- folk Tatar ornament (framed).
The predatory animal is shown in profile, its right forepaw is raised, as if in greeting. Each leopard wing has seven feathers, in the center there is a rosette consisting of eight rounded petals.
The symbols of the colors of the coat of arms
An interesting fact is that the colors of the state flag of Tatarstan and its heraldic symbol are the same. In total, four colors were chosen for the image of the coat of arms - two precious (gold and silver), two popular heraldic (scarlet and green).
Silver, which is used to depict a winged leopard, is always associated with nobility and wealth. The scarlet color is chosen for the image of the sun disk, the color means happiness, success. Green and gold, present in the frame of the shield, symbolize wealth, prosperity, the desire for development and prosperity.

Leopard is one of the main characters of the Tatar epic, wings speak of its unusual origin and purpose. The pose of an animal, that is, its raised paw, is interpreted by scientists in the field of heraldry as a desire to demonstrate the power of power, its greatness. The claws and teeth of the animal, which are traced quite clearly, remind of the readiness to defend the borders of the homeland.
