The capital of Russia has always emerged victorious from all military conflicts. Perhaps it was the coat of arms of Moscow, the official symbol of the main city of the state, and the George the Victorious depicted on it that contributed to this.
Description of the coat of arms
For the first time, a warrior fighting a snake appeared on the coat of arms of Moscow during the reign of Ivan III. The description of the modern image of the main symbol of the Russian capital is officially enshrined in a law approved in June 2003.
The coat of arms is presented in the form of a quadrangular shield with a pointed tip and rounded lower corners. The main characters are depicted on the shield:
- George the Victorious, canonized.
- A black serpent with a dragon-like appearance.
The coat of arms of the capital of Russia has a restrained color scheme, which can be seen in any color photo. The most popular heraldic colors are used. The shield itself is scarlet, the rider and horse are depicted in silver. You can also notice that George's cloak is light blue, and the spear is gold. The snake, as befits a representative of the dark forces, is drawn in black.
History of the coat of arms of Moscow
During the reign of Ivan III, the main symbol of the city depicted just a warrior acting as the defender of the Russian land. That is, the central character was not associated with any famous Russian saint or military leader.
Many innovations in Russia are associated with the name of Peter I, by the way, it was he who suggested that the serpent fighter depicted on the coat of arms of Moscow be considered Saint George. True, it was still far from the official approval of the coat of arms of the capital of Russia. This happened only in 1781, at the same time a description of the characters and composition appeared, the main colors were determined, which have survived to this day (red shield, black serpent).
The October Revolution abolished the old symbol in a stroke and approved its coat of arms for the capital of the new state. Naturally, all the elements depicted on it were associated with the victory of the proletariat. The author of the sketch of the image D. Osipov proposed the following elements - a five-pointed star, an obelisk, a sickle and a hammer, a cogwheel and ears of rye.
The appearance of a star on the coat of arms of Moscow was associated with the victories of the Red Army; the obelisk was erected as the first revolutionary monument. The hammer and sickle, of course, symbolized the link between the village and the city, and a gear with ears of corn was used in the same meaning.
In 1993, Yuri Luzhkov, the acting mayor of Moscow, returned the historical coat of arms to the capital, and also introduced the Day of the Emblem and Flag, which is celebrated annually on May 6.
