Description of the attraction
The pearl of Orthodox culture and one of the most beautiful historical and architectural monuments in the Penza region is the Trinity-Scanovsky Monastery, located in the Narovchatsky District, in the village of Skanovo. The emergence of the monastery dates back to the beginning of the 17th century (during a fire in 1676, all documents related to the construction of the monastery buildings were burnt). The wooden church and bell tower built after the fire in 1795 were replaced with stone buildings with a white facade, including a five-domed cathedral church with two floors with external painting.
Today, the central part of the monastery is decorated with the majestic two-story Trinity Cathedral, in the upper part there is a temple with the throne of the Life-Giving Trinity, on the north side, opposite the cathedral, above the holy gates (in the bell tower), a small church was built in the name of the Wonderworker Nicholas. To the south of the monastery, among the fence, there is the hospital Church of the Forerunner, consecrated in 1812. The entire building is made in the same architectural style, making the monastery complex harmonious and functional at the same time.
Before the revolution, the Narovchatsky Trinity-Scanovsky monastery was for men, but after 60 years of Orthodox oblivion (in the 1990s, the destroyed and ruined monastery buildings were transferred to the jurisdiction of the Penza diocese), it was decided to establish a women's monastery. A particularly revered shrine in the Scanovsky Monastery is the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, painted in the Bryansk region, in the city of Trubchevsk by the monk Euthymius and, according to legend, having extraordinary power and included in the list of miraculous icons of Russia.
