Description of the attraction
Free Trade Hall was built in Manchester in 1853-56. at the site where the "Peterloo massacre" took place, as reported by a memorial plaque on the building. For a long time it has been used as a public meeting place, for lecturing and as a concert hall. Here in 1904 Winston Churchill made a speech in defense of the freedom of British trade.
In the 60s and 70s, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Sex Pistols performed here.
The building was almost completely destroyed as a result of the bombing in December 1940, only the walls remained, in which in the 50s the concert hall was rebuilt according to a new project. In 2004 a hotel was opened here. The building has been completely renovated, but the original facade, made in the style of Italian palazzo, staircase and sculptures of the 50s, has been preserved.
