Lipsi Island
Lipsi Island

Description of the attraction

Lipsi is a small group of small islands in the Aegean Sea (part of the Dodecanese archipelago, also known as the Southern Sporades). The name "Lipsi" is the largest and also the only inhabited island in this group. Among the small Greek islands, Lipsi is perhaps one of the most famous and most visited.

The only settlement of Lipsi is the port town of the same name, located in a small picturesque bay. Here you can stay in small, cozy hotels or apartments. There are excellent taverns and cafes in the village where you can enjoy local delicacies. By the way, you should definitely try thyme honey, cheese, grapes and excellent wine.

Despite the very small area of the island, there are many good beaches with crystal clear waters and picturesque bays. The most visited of them lie near the village - Kambos, Elena and Lientu. Secluded beaches such as Khokhlakura, Katsadia, Turcomnima, Monodendri and Platis Yialos are also popular.

Lipsi has many small churches and monasteries. Among the most interesting temples of the island is the Panagia Harou Church (7-8 century AD), which houses the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. You can also visit the Church of St. Ioannis Theologos (the largest church on the island), the Church of the Virgin, the Church of Agia Nektaria, the Church of St. Nicholas, the Temple of the Prophet Elijah. Also among the attractions of the island is Ontas Cave.

Due to the considerable distance from the mainland, Lipsi does not experience too much influx of tourists, so this place is ideal for lovers of a calm and secluded holiday. Getting to the island is very easy, as there is a fairly regular connection with the port of Piraeus, as well as with the islands of the Dodecanese archipelago. The island of Lipsi becomes especially popular in August, when the religious holiday Panagia Harou (patron saint of the island) and the Wine Festival are held here.
