Tula is associated with many things - samovars, gingerbread, gun shops, a shod flea, clay whistles. The city, which was probably named after the Tulitsa river, dates back to 1146.
From time immemorial, strong-minded people have lived here, who are accustomed to defending their freedom with weapons in their hands, to produce these weapons on their own, and to do it so efficiently that they knew about the Tula gunsmiths far beyond the borders of present-day Russia.
They say that the stone Kremlin, the heart of the city, was able to withstand the raids of the Crimean Tatars, and this will be the first place that the locals will remember when answering the question of where to go in Tula. However, there can be really a lot of recommendations.
Main attractions
Of greatest interest for tourists is the old part of Tula - the Kremlin and the neighborhoods around it, on the one hand bounded by Sovetskaya Street, and on the other - by the Upa River.
All the sights of Tula can be divided into three groups:
- Kremlin … The main local architectural treasure, built in the 16th century, rebuilt several times and now it is a perfectly preserved complex, surrounded by fortress walls with 9 towers that have their own names. On its territory there are two cathedrals - the Assumption and Epiphany and the shopping arcade. You can allocate 2-3 hours to inspect the Kremlin;
- temples … Walking two steps away from the Kremlin, you can see a lot of interesting things. At the intersection of Blagoveshchenskaya Street and Blagoveshchensky Lane there is a temple of the same name - the oldest in the city. It was built at the end of the 17th century. The recently restored Pokrovskaya Church is located a stone's throw from the Annunciation Church. Under the walls of the Kremlin you can find cathedrals that were once part of the now disappeared Assumption Monastery - the squat Spaso-Preobrazhensky and Assumption, reminiscent of a fairytale tower;
- museums … Tula is sometimes rightfully called the city of museums. Curious tourists draw up lists of places in Tula in advance. They include museums of gingerbread and samovars, an art museum, a museum of local lore, a motorcycle museum, a machine tool museum, the Kremlin weapons museum in the Epiphany Cathedral and an exhibition in the Spasskaya Tower, where instruments of torture are demonstrated, etc.
