Main attractions
Ivanovo was formed in 1871 by the merger of two neighboring settlements - Ivanovo and Voznesensky Posad. Until now, residents of Ivanovo conditionally divide their city into these districts. Local attractions include:
- historical Buildings … The first stone "secular" building of the entire city is located in Old Ivanovo. This is the Shchudrovskaya tent dating from the 17th century. It got its name from the name of one of the owners - the merchant O. Shchudrov, who wanted to turn it into a factory. Look for her on August 10th Street. There are two interesting mansions on Maria Ryabinina Street - the Art Nouveau Dühringer estate, which is more reminiscent of a fairytale castle, and the neoclassical mansion of the merchant Sokolov's son. In Voznesensky Posad you can find houses with fancy names - horseshoe house, ship house, bird house;
- museums … Most of the tourists who are brought to Ivanovo as part of a tour of the Golden Ring immediately go to museums. There are a lot of these establishments here. The most popular is the Ivanovo Art Museum, where about 40 thousand exhibits are collected: antique artifacts, icons, original skilful gizmos from China and Persia, art canvases by masters of Western Europe of the 16th-19th centuries, works of Russian artists and much more. There is a shop at the museum where products of local craftsmen are sold - embroidered napkins, painted boxes, trays, etc. The Museum of History and Local Lore displays documents, weapons, books, coins and similar exhibits that tell about the history of the city and its environs. The Chintz Museum is dedicated to the development of the textile industry in the city;
- sacred buildings … Visit the Kazan and Assumption Churches and the Vvedensky Monastery.
Where to go for free
Walking around the city is absolutely free, looking at the streets, squares and parks, in any weather. Take a look at Revolution square, which was built on the site of a covered stream. On it there is a monument to the fighters of the revolution, a cozy square, an imposing House of Soviets decorated with a shield with Lenin's utterance, and the Gandurins' estate, now occupied by various offices.
From Revolution Square you can go to Kokuy Boulevard - Ivanovsky Arbat, where it is forbidden to drive cars. It got its name from a stream that once flowed here. It is here that a Christmas tree is installed for the New Year, city holidays are held here.
The boulevard will lead to Pushkin Square … The most interesting buildings on it are the Church of the Holy Trinity (admission is free) and the Palace of Arts, erected in the style of constructivism in the 30s of the last century. Now in the Palace of Arts there are 3 theaters, including a children's puppet theater.
If you walk from Revolution Square one block to streets of Maria Ryabinina, and then go along it to the intersection with Sovetskaya Street, then you can see three interesting houses - the red-brick mansion of the Shchapovs, now occupied by the Agricultural Academy, the building of the Trade School with clear lines, where D. Furmanov attended classes for some time, and the bizarre structure of a cotton dormitory technical school.
Another interesting place for walking is Sheremetevsky prospect … Look for constructivist buildings there.
