Description of the attraction

This unusual impressive complex, designed by Professor Ilmari Lahdelm in 2008 on the territory of the modern port of Kantasatam with the oldest icebreaker-museum Tarmo (1907), is similar in appearance to a formidable rampart of gigantic proportions. The length of the building, on the roof of which there is a platform with panoramic views of the city and the sea, is 300 m, and the height is up to 30 m.

The museum complex includes the Maritime Museum of Finland, the Kymenlaakso Museum and the Vellamo Information Center. Inside the premises, finished with oak and striking in color palette - from light green and orange to deep blue, various ships, boats, harbor cranes, etc. are exhibited. The sparkling facade in the form of sea reflections made of glass and metal gives the whole ensemble a special personality.

The Information Center stores printed publications, e-books and magazines. The Finnish Maritime Museum presents its main exhibition on the history and development of navigation in northern waters. In the Museum of Kymenlaakso, visitors get acquainted with the material and spiritual heritage of the city and region of Kymenlaakso, as well as with the history of maritime security. There is also a client terminal and a jukebox with recordings of folk melodies, a restaurant and a souvenir shop.
