Description of the attraction
The Chapel of the Icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" in the city of Magnitogorsk is one of the cult sights of the city, located on Kirov Street, near the checkpoint of Prokatmontazh OJSC. The chapel was erected in 2002 as a monument to the repressed special settlers who took part in the construction of Magnitogorsk.
Despite the fact that the chapel is small in size, it is very popular with the locals. Its main visitors are those who were at least a little touched by the terrible history of the twentieth century, whose grandfathers and great-grandfathers built this city in inhuman conditions. Many of them were seriously ill after that, and those who could not bear the hardships died. To date, it is known about more than 5 thousand convicted under Article 58 of the RSFSR Criminal Code - labor army, dispossessed, families of enemies of the people who worked here. In fact, there were many times more victims of state lawlessness committed in the 30-50s.
The construction of the chapel in honor of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” began in 1999. The money for its construction was donated by the employees of the Prokatmontazh enterprise. Consecrated in June 2002, the chapel was assigned to the Church of Michael the Archangel. It is a brick, one-domed, octahedral chapel in plan, on the edges of which you can see memorial plaques, where the names of the repressed people are listed.
An original architectural detail of the Magnitogorsk chapel is an external spiral staircase leading to the bell tower. Such an architectural solution allowed to preserve the internal space and gave the chapel building an original look.
