Description of the attraction
The amazing Chitragupta temple, which is one of the buildings of the world famous temple complex in the village of Khajuraho, which is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is dedicated to one of the deities of Indian mythology Surya (Surya), the Sun God - the only one of all the temples of the complex. The building was created around the beginning of the 11th century.
Chitragupta is located on a high stone pedestal, "facing" to the east and is traditionally divided into several parts: the main sanctuary, an extensive "vestibule" and mandapa - a semi-open pavilion with a colonnade, which is a kind of entrance to the temple. Unfortunately, the building is currently not in the best condition, although it has already been restored several times. But, despite this, it cannot fail to attract the attention of tourists thanks to its amazing sculptural compositions that cover its walls, both inside and outside, depicting scenes of hunting, battles of elephants, dancing girls, as well as scenes of an erotic nature. After all, the architecture of Chitragupta, like almost all other temples in Khajuraho, is literally permeated with eroticism through and through.
In the main sanctuary of the temple, there is a statue of Surya, whose height is more than one and a half meters - he is depicted in his fiery chariot drawn by seven graceful horses. In addition, in the central niche of the southern facade of the building, there is a statue of Vishnu, which has eleven heads - each head representing one of his many incarnations.
Not far from the temple, there is a beautiful three-stage reservoir, which, no doubt, is also worth a visit.
