Description of the attraction
Claire is a small, mountainous islet off the west coast of Ireland at the entrance to Clew Bay, County Mayo. The area of the island is about 16 square kilometers, and its permanent population does not exceed 150 people.
Isle of Clare - Impressive coastal cliffs, scenic rolling hills, small woodlands and a host of attractions and activities. It is an ideal place for lovers of outdoor activities and long walks in the fresh air (you can also rent a bike for a walk). The island will also be to the taste of bird watchers.
Among the attractions of Claire, it is undoubtedly worth noting the ruins of the castle tower of the legendary "pirate queen" Gray O'Malley (also known in history as Granual), and the old lighthouse on the northern tip of the island, built in the early 19th century. No less interesting is the small Cistercian abbey of the 14th century, where even today you can see fragments of medieval wall frescoes that have been well preserved to this day.
Go to the Makkala Organic Farm for a lot of fun, where you can attend yoga classes, listen to an entertaining lecture on the basics of nutrition and go horseback riding. You can also go to the nearby islands of Kaher (uninhabited) and Inishtruk.
The island is famous for its very lively nightlife and various festivals (held mainly in the summer). If you decide to spend a few days on the island, you should take into account that the choice of accommodation (a couple of B&B hotels, a hostel, etc.) is quite limited and you should take care of booking in advance.
You can get to Clare Island by ferry, departing from Roonagh pier near the village of Louisborough, the journey will take no more than 20 minutes (in the off-season the ferry runs only twice a day - morning and evening).
