Description of the attraction
4-5 km south of the center of Corfu (Kerkyra) is the Kanoni district, located on the peninsula of the same name. In ancient times, there was an ancient city here. Kanoni is one of the most famous landmarks of Corfu. The highlight of this area is the Vlaherna monastery and the island of Pontikonisi, better known as the "Mouse Island".
The Vlaherna Monastery is located on a small piece of land, which is connected to the peninsula by a narrow concrete pier. The snow-white church with a small chapel of the Virgin Mary occupies almost the entire land area. The beautiful architectural complex is almost completely surrounded on all sides by azure water and looks very picturesque. The Blachernae Monastery was built in the 17th century in honor of the Blachernae Icon of the Mother of God. The miraculous icon is kept in the monastery today.
There is a small fishing pier near the Vlaherna monastery. From here you can take a boat excursion to another pearl of these places - the picturesque tiny island of Pontikonisi (translated from Greek means "Mouse Island"). According to ancient legend, this islet was once the ship of Odysseus, but an angry Poseidon turned it to stone. The island is home to the Pantokrator monastery, which was built in the 12-13th centuries. To get to the monastery, one has to climb a long white staircase that resembles a mouse's tail (hence the name of the island). The island of Pontikonisi is completely covered with lush green vegetation, which creates a unique picture. From the shores of Corfu, it looks like a small green oasis in the middle of azure sea waters.
When making a tour of Corfu, you should definitely visit these places. The secluded little island of Pontikonisi, the snow-white Blachernae and the miraculous icon, the beautiful panoramic views will leave an unforgettable travel experience.
