Description of the attraction

The famous Church of Panaya Limeniotissa, located in the city of Paphos, is considered one of the most ancient Christian churches on the island. It was built in the 5th century, in the early Christian period, in honor of the Mother of God Limenitiossa, who is considered the patroness of the harbor of Kato Paphos. The church, or rather the ruins that remain from it, is located very close to the city port. Now it is surrounded by modern cafes and restaurants.

Throughout its long history, the church of Panaya Limeniotissa has been destroyed almost to the ground twice. The first time this happened back in the 7th century, when Cyprus was attacked by an Arab army. However, at the end of the same century, it was completely restored. But the new Panaya Limeniotissa did not last long. After the devastating earthquake of 1222, which destroyed many other grandiose structures on the island, the temple was no longer rebuilt.

Although today there are practically only ruins of the church, parts of the foundation and one column are still well preserved there, as well as beautiful mosaic floors that have practically not been touched by time, which are made in the traditional Byzantine style. In addition, several more columns of the temple have already been completely restored in our time.

Now this place is of great interest among tourists and even local residents, as it has a really great historical and cultural value. These ruins allow you to literally touch the ancient history of the island and feel the atmosphere of that era.
