Description of the attraction
Makrinitsa is one of the largest and most interesting mountain villages in Pelion. It is located not far from the city of Volos at an altitude of 350-700 m above sea level, in the form of an amphitheater going down the slopes of picturesque mountains overgrown with dense vegetation. Makrinitsa is also called "the balcony of Pelion", as its central square offers stunning panoramic views of the Volos and the Pagassian Gulf stretching below.
Makrinitsa traces its history back to ancient times. In the 17th century, along with Zagora, it was one of the main cultural centers of the region. The town was actively developing in the middle of the 19th century. From those times, magnificent old mansions have been perfectly preserved, which today are of important historical value.
In recent decades, the village has become a popular tourist destination. Despite the huge influx of tourists, Makrinitsa managed to maintain its unique flavor and charm. Traditional stone houses (mostly three-storey), designed in the same style and literally immersed in greenery, cobbled streets, numerous fountains create a special atmosphere and comfort.
A favorite place for locals and guests of Makrinitsa is its main square. In cozy taverns and cafes under century-old spreading plane trees, you can hide from the heat, relax and enjoy excellent local cuisine. One of the coffee houses is decorated with magnificent frescoes by the famous Greek artist Theophilos. On the square there is also a magnificent marble fountain "Immortal Water", built in 1809, and the Church of St. John.
You should definitely visit the churches of St. Athanasius, St. Nicholas, St. George and the monastery of St. Gerasim. Among the attractions of Makrinitsa, it is also necessary to highlight the small but interesting Ethnographic Museum.
The excellent ski resort of Agriolefkes is just 12 km from Makrinitsa. Beach lovers will find a lot of good beaches near Volos.
