Description of the attraction

The history of the Samara embankment began long before the formation of the city in 1367, when the Venetian merchants marked the settlement-pier Samar on the map. The year of Samara's foundation is considered to be 1586, as a security fortress on a section of the Volga River in order to protect shipping.

Until the middle of the nineteenth century, the embankment was lined with warehouses, grain barns, wooden houses, markets, stables, timber stock exchanges, and along the entire coastal section there were many small marinas. The decoration of the old embankment was a white-stone chapel built in the name of St. Alexis in the Russian style and the Zhiguli brewery von Wakano in a characteristic German style of red brick.

The construction of the embankment as a recreation and entertainment area began in 1935 under the direction of the architect M. A. Trufanov. Hundreds of perennial trees were planted on four tiers of the coastal zone, the beach was landscaped, street lights were installed, a river station was built (1973), the Parus fountain was opened and the Ladya stele was created (1986), which later became the sculptural emblem of Samara.

Now the embankment is an integral part of the panorama of the city from the Volga, more than five kilometers long, decorated with flower beds and fountains, cascades of stairs and terraces with recreation areas. A lot of walking paths paved with granite and a wide sandy beach make a vacation on the Samara embankment simply unforgettable.
