Description of the attraction

In the northeastern Indian state of Assam, there is another famous nature reserve - Kaziranga National Park. The place, first of all, is famous for the fact that more than two-thirds of the entire world population of Indian (or armored) rhinos live on its territory.

The territory of the current reserve began to attract attention back in 1904, after the wife of the then Indian Viceroy Marie Victoria Lightyear Curzon visited it. She was disappointed that in the place, which was famous for the large number of rhinos, she did not get to see any of these animals. At her request, Lord Curzon initiated the creation of a protected area on this territory, and in 1905 a park was created on an area of 232 sq km, the main focus of which was the preservation and increase of the population of Indian rhinos. Over time, the territory of the reserve has expanded and at the moment its area is 430 sq km. The park received the official status of a national protected zone in 1974.

In addition to rhinos, Kaziranga is home to about 35 species of mammals, many of which are listed in the Red Book. So the park is inhabited by barasings (or swamp deer), Indian buffaloes, sambars, elephants, gauras, boars, Indian muntjaks, leopards, Indian tigers. Moreover, Kaziranga acquired the status of a tiger protection zone only in 2006, but at the same time it is a park where the density of these representatives of the feline family is the highest.

In addition, this reserve is a very popular place among bird watchers, as a huge number of birds live on its territory, such as gray and curly pelicans, white-eyed duck, great spotted eagle, long-tailed eagle.

Kaziranga offers tourists a wide variety of entertainment programs, including elephant safaris and bird watching. Hiking in the park is prohibited due to the risk of visitors encountering wildlife.
