Description of the attraction
Filoti is a charming mountain village in the central part of the Greek island of Naxos. The settlement is located at the foot of Mount Zas (the highest peak of the island), at an altitude of 400 m above sea level, about 19 km from the administrative center of the island - the city of Naxos (Chora). It is one of the largest and most beautiful settlements on the island with a population of about 1,800. Local residents are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.
The picturesque village of Filoti, descending along the slopes of picturesque hills in the form of an amphitheater, is a traditional Greek settlement with typical architecture for the region, labyrinths of narrow cobbled streets, ancient churches and a captivating atmosphere of cordiality and hospitality of local residents. A favorite place for both Filoti residents and its guests is the main square with many cozy taverns and cafes. Here, in the shade of a spreading century-old plane tree, you can relax after a walk and enjoy excellent local cuisine.
Among the sights of Filoti, it is worth noting the Church of Our Lady of Filiotissa (1718) with an impressive bell tower, marble iconostasis and unique icons, the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Barotsi Tower (1650). The picturesque surroundings of Filoti seem to be created for lovers of long walks.
Not far from Filoti is one of the main attractions of the island of Naxos - Pyrgos Himarou Tower. The grandiose fortification was built in the Hellenistic era, and has survived quite well to this day.
You should definitely visit the Za cave with incredibly beautiful stalagmites and the oldest monastery on the island - Photodotis near the village of Danakos.
