Palazzo Reale, also known as Palazzo Reggio and Palazzo Vichereggio, is a historic building in the city of Cagliari in Sardinia, the ancient residence of the royal governors during the Aragonese dynasty and the period of Spanish rule. Representatives of the Savoy dynasty were also housed here. Today Palazzo Reale is occupied by the Prefecture and Administration of the Province of Cagliari.
The palace is located in Piazza Palazzo in the historic quarter of Castello. It was built in the 14th century, and from 1337, by order of Pietro IV of Aragon, it became the seat of the Viceroy. Over the centuries, the building has been rebuilt and expanded more than once. In particular, the Palazzo underwent a major reconstruction in the 18th century. In 1730, according to the project of architects from Piedmont Joubert and Vincenti, the Skalone d'onore staircase was built, which led to the mezzanine. The rooms of the mezzanine itself were restored in 1735. The western façade with the main portal was completed around 1769, as follows from the inscription on the lunette of the glazed door overlooking the central balcony.
Between 1799 and 1815, the Palazzo Reale was the official residence of the royal family and the court, which were in exile (Turin was occupied by Napoleon in those years). And in 1885, the palace became the property of the province of Cagliari - it housed the provincial government. At the same time, the interiors were restored anew. In 1893, work began on the decoration of the Council Room - the artist from Perugia Domenico Bruschi made frescoes and molded angels. The decoration of the Palazzo Reale was completed in 1896.
