The Hungarian capital is called one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and therefore it is not surprising that the question of how to get to Budapest quickly and inexpensively worries many travelers. The capital of Hungary is connected by railways and roads with almost all major European cities, and by plane you can fly to Budapest from Moscow both with a regular direct flight and with connections.

Choosing wings

Many European airlines offer special ticket prices from time to time. Thanks to such promotions, it is possible to travel to the countries of the Old World quickly and inexpensively. To track special offers, the easiest way is to subscribe to the air carriers' emails on their official websites.

Aeroflot and Wizz Air fly directly to Hungary from Russia. The Russian air carrier sells tickets from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport to Budapest for no less than 250 euros. It is more profitable to fly without connections with a Hungarian low-cost airline - from 170 euros in normal mode.

Connecting flights are cheapest from Austrian Airlines and Air Baltic. Austrians and Latvian airlines will take you from Moscow to Budapest with stops in Vienna and Riga, respectively, for 170 euros.

A direct flight takes about 2.5 hours, the duration of the connecting flight depends on the time spent on the transfer and the route chosen.

Residents of St. Petersburg can take advantage of the proximity of Finland and for them the solution to the question of how to get to Budapest can be a flight from the Finnish capital to the Hungarian capital on a European low-cost airline. Such companies sell tickets very cheaply, and you will have to pay no more than 69 euros for the flight

The airport of Budapest, where international flights arrive, was formerly called Ferihegy, and now bears the name of Franz Liszt. It is located half an hour from the city center and you can get from it to the main attractions by public transport:

  • Buses follow both to the very center and to the final stop of the blue metro line, from where it will be much faster to get to the city during rush hour. The fare is about 1.5 euros.
  • Airport Shuttle minibuses leave as they fill up with passengers traveling in the same direction. To pay, register at special counters with the shuttle logo. The fare will be around 6 euros.
  • If you need the Budapest train station to continue your journey, choose the train as your means of transfer. High-speed trains leave from the station at the airport every half hour and continue to the West Station of the Hungarian capital.

For a taxi ride to the city center, you will have to pay about 10 euros.

How to get to Budapest by bus and train

If you prefer ground transport to air, you can also get from Moscow to the Hungarian capital by bus. The only drawback of this enterprise is a very long journey.

Ecolines buses leave from Moscow every second Thursday of the month:

  • The ticket costs about 100 euros one way.

The car is not a luxury

Going to Hungary by car is a very real task not only for residents of Moscow, but also for motorists from other cities of Russia. The shortest route lies through Belarus, Poland and Slovakia, and the distance between the Russian and Hungarian capitals is approximately 1800 km.

The cost of gasoline in the countries to be crossed ranges from 0.59 euros in Belarus to 1.33 euros in Poland. In Hungary, a liter of fuel will cost 1.2 euros. The cheapest gasoline is at gas stations located near large shopping centers, and the most expensive is at gas stations on the autobahns.

Many European countries require a special permit to travel on toll roads. It is called a vignette and is purchased immediately when crossing the state border at a gas station or border checkpoint. The cost of such a permit for a car for 10 days is approximately 10-12 euros. A vignette is required for traveling in Hungary and Slovakia. In Poland and Belarus, tolls may apply to individual sections, depending on the distance traveled.

Do not forget about the need to comply with traffic rules on the roads of Europe. Fines for violating them can be very impressive.

All prices in the material are approximate and given for March 2017. It is better to check the exact fare on the official websites of the carriers.
