The capitals of Austria and Hungary are separated by about three hundred kilometers, and tourists often cross the border of the two countries to see the sights of both cities. Choosing how to get from Vienna to Budapest, please note that you can use land, air and water transport.
By train
High-speed trains cover the distance between the two capitals in about three hours. There are three classes of carriages on trains - business, 1st and 2nd, but passengers will find a trip even in the second class convenient and comfortable. The cheapest ticket price is about 40 euros one way.

How to get from Vienna to Budapest by bus
This option is the most budgetary of all. On the way from Vienna to Budapest, passengers of buses of Orange Ways and Eurolines, carrying out transportation between the two countries, spend about three hours.
Eurolines buses leave from Erdberg Station in the Austrian capital, located next to Vienna's metro station of the same name. Orange Ways invites its passengers to start their journey from platform N2 of the Stadium metro station near the Olympiaplatz stadium.
The first flight departs at 7.00 am and the last one at 19.30. The price of the issue is from 15 euros one way. Tickets can be bought both at the ticket offices of bus stations, and online on specialized carriers' websites. The bus should be considered not only as the cheapest way to get from Vienna to Budapest, but also as quite comfortable. All cars are air conditioned and equipped with dry closets.
Choosing wings
When asked how to get from Vienna to Budapest, representatives of many airlines, whose planes fly daily and in large numbers in the skies over Hungary and Austria, willingly answer the guests of the European Union. A direct flight will take no more than 45 minutes, and with a change on the road it can take several hours.
Unfortunately, the prices for flights from Vienna to Budapest do not look very democratic, and the cost of a direct flight on the wings of Austrian Airlines will be at least 250 euros. With a transfer in Paris, Amsterdam or Dusseldorf, it will be possible to get there for 130-150 euros.
Vienna Airport is called Schwechat and is located 18 km from the center of the Austrian capital. The airport is connected to the city by numerous shuttles, buses and electric trains. Passengers can also get there by taxi.
Budapest Airport is about 16 km from the city center. Arriving passengers can get from the terminal to the center of the Hungarian capital by electric trains, buses or taxis.
The car is not a luxury
Tourists often prefer to cover not too long European distances in a rented car. Today you can rent a car right at the airport upon arrival. There are many car rental offices in the city.
You can get from Vienna to Budapest by car along the A4 highway, which leaves the city in a southeast direction. The distance from the starting point to the final destination is about 250 km.
Useful information for car travelers:
- The cost of a liter of gasoline in Austria and Hungary is about 1, 16 euros.
- To travel on toll road sections, you will have to purchase a special permit - a vignette. It is mounted on the windshield and its cost for 10 days for passenger cars is about 9 euros in Austria and 3 forints in Hungary.
- In most European cities, parking is paid and the cost of parking a car for an hour starts from 2 euros.
- The use of radar detectors in the EU countries is considered illegal. You can be fined even if the device is turned off.
If you are not limited in funds or are traveling with a family or a company of at least four people, you can also get from Vienna to Budapest by taxi. The approximate cost of the trip is about 200 euros.
Danube waves
The most romantic way to get from Vienna to Budapest is by using the speedboat service between the Reichsbrücke pier in the Austrian capital, located near Mexikoplatz Square, and the Nemzetközi hajóállomás pier in Budapest. Unfortunately, this type of transport is quite expensive and an adult ticket will cost at least 100 euros. The passengers of the hydrofoil will have to spend about five hours on the way. The rules for the carriage of baggage are also not very convenient. You will be allowed to take on board no more than 12 kg of carry-on baggage.
