The two most beautiful European cities are separated by only 330 kilometers of highway, and therefore numerous foreign tourists tend to see both cultural capitals of the Old World, once in the Czech Republic. If you are also deciding how to get from Prague to Vienna, pay attention to ground transportation. Air travel will not be cheap and will take no less time together with check-in than a trip by bus or train.

To Vienna from Prague by train

Rail transport in Europe successfully combines special comfort for passengers, convenient timetable and relative cheapness. Several trains run daily between the Czech and Austrian capitals. The main carriers are Austrian and Czech railways and the companies EuroCity and EuroNight Metropol.

Trains leave from Prague's main train station Hlavní Nádraží and arrive at the Hauptbahnhof station in the Austrian capital.

Useful information:

  • Both Czech and Austrian trains have class 1 and class 2 wagons. Business Class features leather luxury seats.
  • The cost of tickets for the Prague - Vienna train by RailJet is about 19, 39 and 60 euros for a seat in class 2 and 1 carriages and a sleeping couch, respectively. The first train from Prague to Vienna leaves at 6.50 am and the last one leaves around midnight. Their passengers spend a little more than 4 hours on the way.
  • EuroCity trains run between Prague and Vienna Praterstern up to eight times a day. The road takes 4, 5 hours.

How to get from Prague to Vienna by bus

The most affordable European transport is bus transport. You can travel from the Czech Republic to Austria using the carriers MeinFernbus, ArdaTur and Student Agency. The fare for different carriers may vary significantly. ArdaTur is the most expensive in the list of presented companies, and MeinFernbus is the most affordable.

Buses run several times a day and travel time takes from 4 hours 45 minutes to five hours.

Useful information for passengers:

  • In Prague, buses leave from the ÚAN Florenc station, located at Pod Výtopnou 13/10. You can get to the station by the Prague metro. The stop is at the intersection of branches B and C called Florence. Tram lines NN8 and 24 also go there.
  • The Vienna Stadion Bus Station is located at Engerthstrasse 242–244, where U-Bahn trains or buses NN11A, 77A and 80B run.

There are luggage storage facilities at the bus stations (the cost of services is about 2 euros per seat per day), currency exchange offices, cafes, hairdressers and pharmacies. Wireless internet is available for passengers waiting for their flight.

Choosing wings

Austrian and Czech airlines operate daily direct flights from Prague to Vienna and back. Their passengers spend less than an hour in the sky, but they have to pay 150 or more euros for a round trip ticket.

Airport them. Vaclav Havel was built 17 km from the city center and is easily accessible by taxi or metro and bus. The required subway line is marked A, and the station is called Nádraží Veleslavín. There you will have to change to buses NN119 or 100. They go directly to the passenger terminal of Prague International Airport. The total travel time from the center of the Czech capital to the airfield will be no more than half an hour.

Vienna Schwechat Airport is located 16 km from the city. A taxi ride from the terminal to the center of Vienna costs 35-40 euros. The transfer by express train City Airport Train CAT will be much cheaper. It arrives at Vienna's Landstraße metro station (lines U3 and U4) in the city center within 15 minutes after departing from the passenger terminal, and a one-way trip will cost 12 euros. Trains run every 30 minutes from 6 am to midnight. Another S7 train leaves the airport with stops, and the journey takes about half an hour.

The car is not a luxury

When traveling by car in Europe, keep in mind the need for strict adherence to traffic rules. Fines for their violations in any of the EU countries are very significant. Be sure to wear seat belts and use a hand-free device when talking on your mobile phone while driving.

The cost of a liter of gasoline in the Czech Republic and Austria is about the same and amounts to a little more than 1, 1 euro.

If you travel from Prague to Vienna by private car, do not forget to buy a vignette to travel on the country's toll roads. Its price for 10 days is about 10 euros for a passenger car. Permits are sold at border checkpoints and gas stations.

To leave Prague towards the Austrian border, take the international highway D1, heading south-east.
