Appeared on the banks of the turbulent Irtysh in the 18th century, Omsk for a long time served as a Cossack fortress. It is now proudly called the capital of the Siberian Cossack army. A major cultural and historical center of Russia, the city boasts monuments of world importance, included in the competition for the title of a participant in the UNESCO lists. Many architectural sights are located on the Omsk embankment, which stretches along the Irtysh.
An excursion into history
The guard fortification, from which the modern city grew, was laid on the banks of the Irtysh in 1716. The first fortress consisted of only two redoubts located on the site of the River Station at the intersection of today's Lermontov Street with the Omsk embankment. The fortress connected paths from Orenburg and Tobolsk and it played an important role in the work of the system of fortifications of the Upper Irtysh line.
Kolchak's house
There is a mansion on the embankment in Omsk that all local lovers dream of visiting. The registry office occupies part of the house of the merchant Batyushkov, the other half of which is given over to the Kolchak museum.
Omsk merchant Batyushkov built a mansion at the very beginning of the twentieth century, and during the Civil War, Kolchak's residence was located here. As a result of the assassination attempt on the White Guard admiral, the mansion was significantly damaged, but it was restored and reconstructed.
The modern building has the status of a federal architectural monument, but the newlyweds of Omsk love it for a completely different reason. Having officially consolidated their relationship, they take oaths of allegiance to each other on the Omsk embankment to the sound of the Irtysh waves.
Fans of history and local history can visit the museum's exposition, especially since the entrance to it is absolutely free. The exact address of the merchant Batyushkov's house is Irtyshskaya embankment, 9.
On a steamer on the Irtysh
Not far from the Irtysh embankment of Omsk and the Leningradsky bridge at the confluence of the Om river into the Irtysh, a modern River Station has been built. Its outline resembles a white motor ship with a captain's bridge and porthole windows. The lighthouse serves as the mast of the ship, and in the station building itself, in addition to waiting rooms and ticket offices, there is a cultural and entertainment complex.
From Omsk you can go for a boat trip or take a more serious trip - to Salekhard, Khanty-Mansiysk or Tobolsk. The cruise ship "Rimsky-Korsakov" departs to the north several times during the summer season.
