Museum of Fine Arts named after M. A. Vrubel in the city of Omsk is the largest art collection in Siberia, including extensive collections of Russian and foreign art from ancient times to the present.
The Omsk Museum was founded in December 1924. At this time, in the former Governor-General's Palace, thanks to the initiative of the first head of the museum, FV Melekhin, an art gallery was opened at the West Siberian Regional Museum. The gallery was created on the basis of exhibits brought from Moscow from the disbanded Rumyantsev Museum. In subsequent years, the collection was regularly replenished with new works. FV Melekhin personally traveled to Leningrad and Moscow to select the best works of all kinds and genres.
From 1950 to 1955, the collections of the Omsk Museum of Fine Arts increased significantly, especially the works of Soviet masters. In 1955 and 1962, more than 100 works of sculpture, painting, graphics and applied art were donated to the museum from the funds of the State Tretyakov Gallery. In 1995, the museum exhibiting the only painting by M. Vrubel on the territory of Siberia - the triptych "Flowers", was named after this famous Russian artist.
To date, the M. Vrubel Museum displays the largest collection in Siberia. In total, there are about 26 thousand items in the museum's funds. The museum is located in two buildings: the Governor-General's Palace, built in 1862 by the architect F. F. Wagner, and the City Trade Building, erected in 1914 according to the project developed by the architect A. D. Kryachkov (today the Vrubel building of the museum).
The collection of works of Western European art is represented by canvases by the masters of England, France, Italy, Spain, Flanders, Germany, Holland and Austria of the 16th - 19th centuries. Collection of icon painting of the 17th century - early XX century are characterized by icons made in Siberia, the European part of Russia and the Urals. Russian art of the 18th century - the beginning of the XX century. includes paintings by I. Aivazovsky, V. Vereshchagin, A. Venetsianov, M. Vorobiev, I. Shishkin, I. Repin, A. Bogolyubov, K. Korovin, F. Vasiliev, V. Polenov, V. Serov, M. Nesterov, Borisova-Musatova V. and others. The amazing collection of decorative and applied art with monuments of ancient art is of particular interest to museum visitors.
