Description of the attraction

On the shores of the Peshkera Bay, northeast of the old town of Porec, one of the Venetian fortifications has survived - the Northern Defense Tower, which was once connected with other towers by means of high city walls. The walls were partially destroyed over time, and three towers, from the height of which it was so convenient to observe the bay and the land, separated from Porec by a deep moat, have survived to our time. They are now popular tourist sites.

The north tower was built in 1474. It was intended for guard detachments, which could warn the inhabitants of Porec in time in the event of an attack by the Turkish invaders. Now the stone used to clad the facade of the North Tower, almost completely crumbled, exposing the inner layer of sharp stones of irregular shape. Only in some places can you see even stone blocks tightly adjacent to each other.

From time to time, the city authorities close the North Tower for reconstruction, trying to somehow patch up the valuable historical building. Then the passage leading from the Peshker Bay to the old part of the city is also closed. This causes some inconvenience not so much for tourists as for local residents. The works on the conservation of the architectural monument are carried out by a private contractor, who has a permit to work with valuable cultural objects, and the Department for the Protection of Historical Monuments in Pula.

You cannot climb the North Tower. It is only accessible from the outside.
