Description of the attraction

The complex of defensive structures of the Jesuit monastery (Mury) is the oldest architectural landmark of the city of Vinnitsa, and is located on the street. Cathedral, 17-23. The complex of the 17th century includes: the building of a Jesuit monastery, a Jesuit church, a collegium, a konvikt (dormitory) and a church, which are surrounded by a fortress wall with towers.

At the beginning of the 17th century, with the arrival of Jesuit monks in the city, with funds donated by the elder V. Kalinovsky, the monks built a defensive monastery on the right bank of the Southern Bug with a church, a collegium and a conquict, in which the monks lived. The buildings, like a fortress, were protected by powerful walls with battle towers at the corners. Such capital moored structures were named "Murams". The walls inclined towards the inside of the courtyard with small loopholes amaze with their formidability and inaccessibility, and the massive towers resemble a huge bell. "Mury" were intended to protect against raids from the Tatars and Cossacks and are the only fortifications that have survived in the city.

In the 70s. In the 19th century, due to the emergency state, the southern side of the defensive wall with the adjacent structures was dismantled. In 1891, part of the church wall collapsed. After some time, the buildings of the monastery began to be restored in connection with the decision to place in it a male (1907), and soon a female (1911) gymnasium.

In 2010, on the basis of the architectural monument of the 17th century, the city authorities created the historical and cultural complex "Vinnytsia Mury". The premises of the former collegium of the Jesuit monastery now house the city archive, and in the building of the monastic cells - the local history museum. The best preserved fragments of the fortress walls with a corner tower can be seen from the back of the monastery.

The revived complex of fortifications of the Jesuit monastery is the center of the cultural life of Vinnitsa, as well as an attractive place for all guests of the city.
