Description of the attraction
Mürzzuschlag is a city in the north-east of Styria, the capital of the region of the same name. Located on the Mürz River near the Semmering Pass, 85 kilometers southwest of Vienna. Initially, Mürzzuschlag was only an industrial area, but today it is popular due to the nearby ski resort, and it itself becomes an excellent place for leisure activities in the cold season.
Settlement in the Duchy of Styria was first recorded in 1227, when Ulrich von Lichtenstein mentioned in his poem "murzuslage", which traveled from Venice to Vienna. In 1854, a railway was opened in Semmering, which connected Semmering with Vienna, contributing to the development of the region's economy. In 1862, the Bleckmann steel mill was opened. At the end of the 19th century, the first ski resort in Central Europe was founded in the Semmering mountain region. Mürzzuschlag received the city rights in 1923.
Many famous people were born in the city of Mürzzuschlag. Victor Kaplan, the inventor of the high-speed turbine, was born in 1876. Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek was born in 1946.
The parish church with the Renaissance altar, the house of Johann Brahms and other old houses in the city center are interesting to see. The city has a modern cultural center. Various exhibitions are held here. The Winter Sports Museum is one of the largest sports museums in the world. The Museum of the Southern Railway is also quite interesting.
