Description of the attraction
Lisbon Oceanarium is the largest oceanarium in Europe. The Oceanarium is located in the Park of Nations, which hosted the World Expo 1998. The famous American architect Peter Chermayeff worked on the Lisbon Aquarium project, who also built the Osaka Aquarium and many other aquariums in the world. The building sits on a dock by the inland sea and from a distance resembles an aircraft carrier.
The aquarium has a large collection of representatives of the marine and oceanic world. Visitors can see both birds and various mammals, many underwater fish and other marine organisms, including plants. In total, the collection numbers about 16,000 individuals of over 450 species. The area of the main exhibition of the oceanarium is 1000 sq.m. with a large aquarium filled with water (5000 cubic meters) and a depth of 7 meters. The water temperature in the aquarium is maintained at a level that is comfortable for tropical fish and fish in temperate latitudes. Through the acrylic windows that glaze the aquarium, you can see swimming sharks, rays, tuna fish, barracuda, sea bass and moray eels. The Lisbon Aquarium is one of the few aquariums where you can see the moonfish, which requires special conditions for keeping. Exotic specimens include 2 large crab spiders and 2 sea beavers.
Around the large central aquarium there are four more, intended for the natural flora and fauna of the Pacific Ocean, the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, and the North Atlantic coast. They are separated from the central aquarium by acrylic sheets. In addition to all this, there are 25 more themed aquariums on the ground floor, each of which is dedicated to a specific species.
