Description of the attraction

Lacheno is a ski resort located in the municipality of Bagnoli Irpino in the province of Avellino in the Italian region of Campania. It consists of the ski resort itself with 18 km of slopes equipped with artificial snow cannons, a lake, Calhendo caves and a mountain tourism center.

Lacheno was established in 1956 as a summer resort with opportunities for outdoor sports, as well as a venue for the Laceno d'Oro film festival, which was later relocated to Avellino. Ski lifts were built here between 1972 and 1975, and Lacheno developed into a popular ski resort with hotels, villas, boarding houses and restaurants.

Lacheno, also known as Piano Lacheno or Lago Lacheno, is located in the eastern part of the province of Avellino, near the border with the province of Salerno. It lies on a wooded plain at an altitude of thousands of meters above sea level, surrounded by the Cervialto and Rajamagra mountains, which are part of the Picentini mountain range. The provincial capital Avellino is 40 km away and Naples is 71 km away.

Lacheno was founded on the southern shore of a small lake of the same name, which was once a swamp. Not far from the lake, there are the grotte del Callendo caves, discovered in 1992 by Giovanni Rama. You can get here from Avellino - the road will take only about half an hour. The nearest airport is in Naples.

Lacheno's economy is based primarily on tourism, especially during the “high” season, from December to March. There is a chair lift in the city that goes to the top of Mount Rayamagra with three stops. In addition, there are many playgrounds for children. Of the sights of Lacheno, it is worth mentioning the old lakeside shelter, built at the beginning of the 20th century and now abandoned, the 19th century Santa Nesta chapel and the very caves of the Grotte del Callendo. In summer, you can go hiking or bird watching in Lacheno, since the kingdom of birds in the vicinity is very diverse.
