Description of the attraction

Jacek Tower is a historical tower that was part of the medieval fortifications of the Polish city of Gdansk. The tower was built in the northwest corner of the city walls in 1400. The construction of the tower was associated with the need to protect the Old City from enemy invasions.

The structure is a 36-meter octagonal tower with a brick dome. Because of its height, it served as an observation point and allowed to see an attack from the side of the Old City, which at that time did not yet have its own fortifications. The tower had eight floors and very thick solid walls (up to three meters). The vaulted cellar under the tower was used as food storage for the city's defenders. The high roof of the pavilion was built only in 1556, when the Jacek Tower was no longer a defensive object. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the tower was used as a warehouse.

During the Second World War, the Jacek Tower suffered significant damage. Repair work was carried out for quite a long time - until 1955. Since 1962, photo exhibitions have been held in the interiors of the tower.
