Description of the attraction
The Bell Tower of Perth is a true symbol of the capital of Western Australia, one of the most beautiful places in Perth. The name of the bell tower, located on the pier on Barrack Street in the heart of the city, can be translated as "Swan Tower". The high pointed tower built in 1999-2001 - 82.5 meters - resembles two huge sails in shape. Inside there are 18 bells, most of which - 12 - have a long history, they were brought from London. There is evidence that they were made in the 14th century! The ringing of these bells marked many historical events: the victory of England over the Spanish Armada in 1588, the return of Captain Cook from a voyage around the world in 1771, the victory at El Alamein in 1942, the coronation of English kings beginning in 1727. In 1988, these bells arrived in Perth to celebrate Australia's Bicentennial. Six more bells have already been cast here. It is one of the largest musical instruments in the world.
The belfry houses a collection of antique clocks, optical instruments and bells, including rare Asian ones, that tells how people kept time before the digital age. Here you can also watch a film about the construction of the bell tower and its history, listen to the ringing and at the same time see the bell ringers - an audiovisual system that broadcasts pictures from different floors of the tower to 9 screens allows you to do this. In the evenings, one of Perth's top attractions is illuminated with all the colors of the rainbow using a new computerized lighting system. / p>
The bell tower is surrounded by a mosaic path lined with ceramic tiles. The tiles were made in schools in Western Australia, and are listed alphabetically by the name of the school. Students of the 1999 school wrote their names on each tile. / p>
Since the opening of the bell tower on December 10, 2000, it has been visited by about 1 million people. / p>
