The Peter and Paul Convent is an architectural monument of the 19th century, located in the historical center of the city of Bender. The official date of the foundation of the monastery is December 26, 2006, although the history of its creation began in the 19th century.
Marcellinus Olshevsky, Lieutenant General, Commandant of the Bender Fortress, initiated the construction of a Roman Catholic church in the name of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, which in its scale and number of parishioners was not inferior to the Chisinau Transfiguration Cathedral. The history of the temple was tragic. During the Second World War, the building was significantly damaged and in disrepair. Only in 1951 it was transferred to the needs of a sports school and was reconstructed. In subsequent years, the building also housed a school of builders, a club, a boarding school dormitory, and a lyceum of light industry.
In 1997, as a result of the petition of the Bishop of Dubossary Justinian (Ovchinnikov) and numerous appeals of parishioners, the authorities of Transnistria decided to give the temple to the Orthodox Church. In 2002, a Diocesan Theological School, a Sunday school and a library were opened at the church. At the same time, a community of 12 novices was formed, and in 2006 the first tonsure of four nuns was performed. Thus, gradually the parish church became a monastery one.
The opening of the Peter and Paul Convent was preceded by a large-scale reconstruction. The cells were placed on the first floor, the premises, the roof, the refectory were overhauled, and the exterior of the building was changed.
In 2010, there were about fifty nuns in the monastery. Today the Peter and Paul Convent is the first and only active monastery in Transnistria.
